During the mid-19th century, Tennessee was the site of many major battles during the Civil War, including the bloody Battle of Franklin, where thousands of soldiers died.  Consequently (and not so surprisingly), some of the state’s most haunted and chilling areas are the very spots where these bloody battles took place. 

The Chickamauga Battlefield (where battles during the American Revolution also took place) is located in the southeast corner of the state and is said to be haunted by the ghosts of soldiers who perished there.  In fact, the ghost of one solider nicknamed “Old Green Eyes” is believed to haunt the battlefield to this day.

During 1864, the epic war played out just yards from the historic Carnton Mansion in The Battle of Franklin; the battle was one of the bloodiest and most devastating of the war for the Confederate States Army.  From the back porch of the mansion, visitors can now see the 1481 marked graves of the Confederate soldiers who died fighting there.  Those very soldiers are believed to now haunt the historic and eerie Carnton Mansion.

Another famous home that was heavily impacted by the gory battles of the Civil War is the Carter House, also located in Franklin.  Built in 1830 by Fountain Branch Carter, the Carter Mansion became the center of one of the bloodiest and most terrifying battles in the Civil War.  In fact, during that battle, the entire Army of Tennessee was destroyed and again, it’s believed soldiers who perished during the fight now haunt the mansion.  But unlike the Carnton Mansion, it’s not just those soldiers that allegedly occupy the Carter Mansion; the original owners and some of their family members supposedly haunt the mansion as well.  The ghost of Tod Carter, a son of Fountain’s who died just a hundred yards from his house while fighting with the Confederate Army, has purportedly made several appearances in the house.  In addition, staff members have claimed to see the apparition of a little girl disappear in a hallway and down a flight of stairs.  Some have also claimed hearing a strange yet friendly voice of a woman in the house.
